Abstract :
Summary form only given. We describe a Yb-doped double cladding fibre (DCF) amplifier, which when pumped by a 104 /spl mu/m wide broad stripe laser diode generates 3.3 W and exhibits a maximum electrical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 34 percent. The amplifier employs v-groove side-pumping which allows compact amplifier packaging.
