            Abstract : 
The paper describes an integrated `pump-motor-containment´ concept which is a radical new development in the chemical process industry. These pumps employ a canned line-start pm motor providing synchronous operation and high load efficiencies. This paper describes the development of an analytical method for predicting both the induction and synchronous motor torques. A laboratory prototype machine is used to validate the model. A study investigates the critical influence of certain design features on the operating performance of the pump motor.
