Abstract :
To minimise overall mass the designer needs mechanical design tools to link the machine structure to airgap deflection. A polynomial modelling technique applied to finite element results for radial-flux structures is introduced and used on a real example. The relationship between airgap clearance and flux density is explored for both axial-and radial-flux machines. Typical adjustments to these basic equations are found.
