Abstract :
Summary form only given. Recently, excited state absorption (ESA) in the near infrared was shown to be an important source of losses in Cr:forsterite lasers. In spectroscopic experiments with /spl mu/s resolution ESA bands were observed from 1100 to 2100 nm in the infrared, from 600 to 800 nm in the visible, as well as from 200 to 400 nm in the ultraviolet. We study here the transient ESA behavior with femtosecond resolution and specifically the role of the /sup 3/T/sub 1/(/sup 3/P) and /sup 3/T/sub 1/(/sup 3/F) energy levels in the ESA process.
