Abstract
A CAD graphics system that analyzes computed tomography (CT) scanned image slices and reconstructs 3-D images of bones for preoperative surgery planning is described. The purpose of this system is to aid an orthopedic surgeon in performing total knee replacement surgery. The first part of the system reads in the CT scan data of the patient´s leg and performs image analysis. To interact with the surgeon´s examination, CT images can be edited and manipulated on a high-resolution monitor for observation. The output of this image analysis is reconstructed into 3-D solid bones by the second part of the system, a 3-D graphic training system that can emulate the procedures of total knee arthroplasty. This planning system allows a surgeon to simulate the bone alignment, cutting, and implant placement before the operation
