Abstract :
The principle of cause and effect is also valid for traffic flow. But how to quantify the impact of environment conditions on traffic? A research project co-funded by the Austrian Ministry of Transport tested several methods to show dependencies and interaction between weather, events and traffic flow. This document explains the different approaches to solve the problem and summarizes that the impact of environment conditions is often predictable. Roads and traffic on specific roads have typical characteristics and allow to detect regular patterns. Based on this knowledge a new quality of traffic forecast can be developed.
