Abstract
A technique for parsing and coding sign language is presented. The code can be used to generate and send signs over the telephone lines. A system called the graphics communication device (GCD), which can transmit the constructed signs in full duplex over regular telephone lines, has been developed for use by deaf persons. In the initial coding, the most often used hand shape, position, orientation, and movement of the hands are supported. As a result, some of the signs may not have the proper representation. Since the sign subcomponents are organized hierarchically in a tree structure a more extensive set of signs can be easily included. The method of parsing and coding of the signs is described in detail
