Abstract :
In this paper, the possibility of employing a microstrip based technology periodic structure for the purpose of low cost sensing is discussed. The CAD model for the purposed device is discussed. Moreover, the electromagnetic response of such a fixed-geometry passive structure can vary when the characteristics of a single layer or several layers fluctuate due an external stimulus. For example, by observing the antenna response due to a variation in the covering of a single rectangular patch antenna the physical, chemical and/or mechanical variations within a given environment can be monitored. Similar concepts and observation techniques are purposed for the investigated structure by monitoring the change in reflection losses or other antenna characteristics.
