Abstract :
This paper tries to improve the power quality and to contribute with additional active power for isolated power systems. These systems either have their own generation or are connected to the network but they are always far away from great power generation centres. The proposed methodology consists of integrating an active power filter with a photovoltaic (PV) generation source, which use the same inverter for connecting to the network. Through this integration a double aim is fulfilled: on the one hand the power quality is improved through the compensation capacity of active power filters, and on the other an extra contribution of active power is supplied by a PV system. The power system operation is analysed through the instantaneous power theory and simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK environment. This is a feasible solution for the growth planning of isolated systems, while the operation and maintenance costs as well as energy losses can be reduced
