Abstract :
Third generation mobile radio systems will be an evolution of the second generation, in particular of the well-accepted TDMA-based pan-European GSM. However, since CDMA provides unprecedented frequency diversity, interferer diversity, and flexibility, it is reasonable that a third generation mobile radio system concept incorporates CDMA. Within the European COST project 231, such a mobile radio system concept which represents an enhancement to all TDMA-based mobile radio systems such as GSM was developed by the Research Group for RF Communications at the University of Kaiserslautern. This new mobile radio system concept applies joint detection (JD) techniques and is therefore termed JD-CDMA mobile radio system. Background information about the development of the JD-CDMA mobile radio system is presented, making reference to the benefits of various multiple access techniques and JD techniques for multipath radio channels
