Abstract
This paper presents a panel about the evolution of static var compensator (SVC) technology at a Brazilian generation and transmission utility (CHESF) starting from commercial operation of the first SVC installed in 1986 until nowadays. The benefits on power quality introduced by these equipment are highlighted and the more relevant differences among first generation equipment installed fifteen years ago and ultimate generation one recently installed are also presented. Finally, the most relevant trends of SVC technology for power systems application are remarked either.
