Abstract
After a short introduction relating to the process which has led to the decision to choose slow speed diesel generators, the paper describes Companhia de Electricidade de Macau (CEM) experience with these generators (in the range of 24 to 37 MW, the largest diesel engines used for power generation) provided with waste heat recovery systems achieving an overall efficiency close to 50% and contributing approximately 75% of the Territory´s demand. The paper focuses on the proven performance data and a brief analysis of stoppages is made. Characteristics of main and auxiliary equipment are shown and a brief description of the evolution of the system for monitoring, control and supervision of diesel generator units is presented. It also highlights the experience with the project management up to the taking over and human resources required for operation and maintenance
