Abstract
The state-of-the-art has now advanced to the point that it is possible to provide the so-called triple play of video, voice and data to consumers via either a fiber network that extends to a very few homes (commonly called fiber-to-the-curb, or FTTC), or a fiber network that extends to the individual home (commonly called fiber-to-the-home, or FTTH). We emphasize the newer FTTH systems here. Typically an interface box is located on the side of the home, with interfaces to provide all services. This paper considers a number of unique issues involved in getting services from the side of the home to the subscriber. This is often called the "last 100 feet," and in some respects is the most challenging portion of the network.
