Abstract :
Although mobile devices are rapidly developing with new advanced functionalities, the advances in battery capacity are much slower. In the Green-T project, we address the energy efficiency problem by utilizing multiple radio interfaces in efficient ways in order to optimize the energy consumption. A first step is to use the interface which provides the best energy efficiency for the required service quality at a specific time. To determine this in an efficient way, our approach is to collect, distribute and utilize context information. To further improve the energy efficiency, the terminals may collaborate and pool their joint resources of both short-range and wide area cellular radio interfaces. Concrete solutions to improve energy efficiency include exploitation of mobile cloud concepts as well as using network coded ARQ. The purpose of this paper is twofold: i) we outline how we will use these different techniques, and ii) we describe a system architecture that supports the integration of these techniques into an energy efficient solution.
