Abstract
Sigma Voltage Regulator (VR) was proposed for achieving high efficiency. It takes advantage of the high efficiency unregulated converter to improve the overall efficiency and combines a low power Buck converter for voltage regulation. This paper mainly discusses the control scheme and transient performance of Sigma VR. The small-signal-model is analyzed first. Then the control strategy and the detailed control design of Sigma VR to achieve constant output impedance for AVP and transient are given. At the end, the simulation and experimental result demonstrates that Sigma VR can achieve very good transient performance with less output bulk capacitors compared with that of conventional Buck VR.
