Abstract :
Series capacitor compensation can significantly increase the power transfer capabilities of transmission lines in a power system. High levels of series compensation have been avoided because of the resonances that can occur including subsynchronous shaft oscillations. With a phase controlled inductor in parallel, most resonances can be suppressed and the power flow modulated to damp power swing oscillations. This paper highlights some of the limitations of this technology and proposes an alternative scheme for stabilization of series compensation based on resonant inverters
