Abstract :
The paper presents the study of magnet overhang effects in a permanent magnet brushless DC (PM BLDC) motor. Two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) analysis was carried out on a set of two PM BLDC motors with same stator slot but different rotor poles and the results are compared to bring a correlation between the two analysis techniques and therefore it has been evaluated that 2D FE analysis can be effectively utilized for accurate performance prediction in cases where magnet overhangs are present. The electromagnetic parameters like stator tooth flux density and phase back EMF were compared and are matching fairly well.
