Abstract
The paper proposes a new topology for electrical drives using a reduced matrix converter. Adding a suitable offset to the reference value, a unidirectional converter output phase current results. Therefore the number of unidirectional active switches in the matrix can be reduced to 50%. The commutation strategy becomes inherent safe and simple compared to the classical matrix converter. Problems with static magnetic fields in the stator field, caused by the DC-parts in the output currents, can be solved using a transformer or a special type of three-phase winding for the stator of the three-phase motor. The latter enables the direct coupling of the converter and the induction machine.
