Abstract :
The authors have described in detail a new approach for the analysis of optical preamplifier receiver performance. Through a rigorous statistical derivation, they have obtained formulas for the numerical calculation of the mean and variance of the receiver signal. Simulation has been carried out on a reported receiver system and results were compared with both the experimental data and those from other more established BER calculation methods. The discrepancies between the simulation results are discussed. It is concluded that this new approach is best suited for the preamplifier receiver performance analysis involving narrow bandpass optical filters
