Abstract :
A low-firing multilayer capacitor (MLC) dielectric based on magnesium titanate has been developed. The dielectric meets the Electronics Industries Association (EIA) specifications for COG capacitors and is compatible with internal electrodes of Pd, 70% Ag-30% Pd, or copper, MLCs of 1206 size with nominal capacitance of 100 pF were made with each type of electrode. Those with precious-metal electrodes were fired in air at 1100°C, while those with copper electrodes were fired at 1065°C in an atmosphere with 1 p.p.b. oxygen partial pressure. Capacitor properties at frequencies above 100 MHz were evaluated using a Boonton transmission line. The results clearly illustrate the improved performance obtainable with copper electrodes and the tradeoff to be made when using an alloy of 70% Ag-30% Pd instead of the more costly Pd
