Abstract
A review is given of the procedures necessary for the design and manufacture of custom-made hip joints. It is shown that the failure rate in the under-50 patients can be greatly reduced by the use of a cementless prosthesis. Up to 50 sizes of implant are available worldwide, and these can be stored in the memory to form a library of suitable off-the-shelf prostheses. In the event of the bioengineer being unable to find a suitable match, a custom-designed prosthesis is developed using a video display
