Abstract :
This paper studies the limitations in the use of the root mean square (r.m.s.) value in the detection and analysis of short duration voltage variations in the power quality standard framework. The detection properties of the method proposed in the standards and the errors in the estimation of the magnitude and duration are evaluated for rectangular voltage dips of different magnitude, duration and instant of beginning. The results obtained show the limitations of the method mainly for low magnitude and short duration voltage variations
