Abstract :
We demonstrate a concept of one-dimensional photonic crystals acting as modulators of terahertz radiation with an optical control. The devices are made from dielectric platelets and a semiconducting defect which leads to a defect level in the forbidden band gap. The transmittance at the defect level can then be controlled by photoexcitation of the semiconductor. We measure and discuss the dynamical response of these elements.
