Abstract :
A process leading to the implementation of a computer-based decision support system is described in general terms. Real-life examples from the wholesale business are also given. Emphasis is on the importance of executing a thorough analysis before identifying any forthcoming key figures or `most important information´ for the decision maker. This point is extended with reference to the decision regarding what kind of mathematical model should be used. The authors´ experience indicates that emphasis should be put on the human decision-maker, and his/her ability to understand the constraints and possibilities of the system. Understanding of what is really going on, both within the model and in the real world, seems to be the most crucial point for successful operation in the long run
