Abstract :
A literature search over the last few years has shown that there has been a steady increase in publications on computer-based medical diagnostic applications, ranging from diagnostic aids for the physician or hospital staff, to systems issuing a complete diagnosis to experts or even to patients. Computer-based methods have been applied in so many medical specializations to assist the human expert, enhance one´s senses and skills, or automate procedures, that an enumeration seems no longer adequate. This paper concentrates first on clarifying the terminology of computational intelligence (CI), presents the chronological development of CI systems using the example of Cyprus and investigates the overall significance of CI systems by visualizing the results of an extensive literature search in a medical database
