Abstract :
This work presents a simplified model to estimate the energy consumption in survivable optical transport networks. The model can be applied to static circuit switched networks with an opaque or translucent node architecture. Using the presented model we quantify the energy consumed by each type of equipment and compare both architectures using different routing schemes. Results show that the minimum number of hops routing scheme is more energy-efficient than the minimum demand length or the minimum cost routing schemes. Moreover, under path dedicated protection the energy consumed by backup channels is larger than the one consumed by working channels.
