Abstract :
This paper presents a simple model for the MPEG-2 transport packet error statistics of a DVB-T system derived from simulation assuming perfect knowledge of the channel and perfect synchronization at the receiver. This model is then used to determine the optimum packet length for IP transmission over DVB-T, i.e., the length that maximizes the throughput. We provide an in-depth introduction to the received DVB-T packet loss distribution and show clearly that packet losses are bursty in nature. This paper also analyzes the encapsulation and framing efficiency of IP over DVB-T, and calculates the optimal IP packet length to achieve maximum throughput under a particular scenario.
