Abstract
Summary form only given. The great advances in modern communication systems are mainly due to the fast developments in digital signal processing techniques. In this paper, we first briefly review the main features of six modern signal processing techniques, namely, artificial neural networks (NN), wavelets, genetic algorithms (GA), fractals, higher order statistics (HOS) and constant modulus algorithms (CMA). Some applications of these techniques in the design of antenna arrays for wireless communication systems are tackled. In particular, we review some research activities by the author and his research group dealing with the design of antenna arrays for improved performance in a strong interference environment and to support broadband and multiband operation needed to serve modern multimedia wireless and mobile communication systems.
