Abstract :
Summary form only given. Polyarylenevinylenes are attracting much interest as materials for non-linear optics as well as highly conductive polymers, because they can be obtained as dense, tough and flexible films and show superior chemical stability against oxygen and moisture at room temperature. Among the polyarylenevinylenes, poly(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) or poly(2,5-thienylenevinylene)(PTV) have been intensively investigated because they can be prepared through precursor polymers soluble in water or organic solvents. In this work, poly(p-phenylenevinylene-co-2,5-thienylenevinylene) (poly(PV-co-TV)) was synthesized by the modified sulfonium polyelectrolyte precursor route. The precursor polymer possesses a methoxy leaving group in place of a sulphonium salt group. The precursor polymer was readi1y soluble in tetrahydrofuran and dimethyl foramide. The P(PV-co-TV) was prepared from the precursor polymer by the thermal elemination. The synthesized monomer and polymer was characterized with IR, UV, and NMR spectroscopies. The electric conductivity of the poly(PV-co-TV) was measured by four-point probe method.
