Abstract :
The convergence of techniques from the fields of mechatronics, image sensing and display, virtual reality (VR) and broadband telecommunications is now providing the possibility of developing telepresence (TP) systems. The authors describe a TP experiment in which the hardware consists of a “surrogate head”, the design of which is described, a VR helmet with position/orientation sensor, and a communications link. To avoid confusion the term “remote site” is used to refer to the location of the sensor platform, and the term “home site” to the location of the system user
