Abstract :
In the future, a large increase in load, principally in the developing countries, is expected. This growth will force the expansion of the generation and transmission infrastructure. At the same time, many countries have set ambitious targets to increase the renewable energy generation. Furthermore, since unbundling, generation expansion planning and transmission expansion planning are carried out separately, although the network infrastructure must be considered in the generation expansion planning. The aim of this work is therefore to develop a methodology for economic strategic planning that leads to the technically and economically optimal development of generation and transmission especially under consideration of renewable energies and energy storage. The optimization methodology is applied to an illustrative case.
