Abstract :
Summary form only given. Efforts are made to identify the defect structures of Poly(Phenylene-Vinylene) PPV converted from its sulphonium precursor by different physical and chemical methods. By XPS or FT-IR analysis, it has been shown that the carbonyl structure is the commun defect appeared in all PPV and in the initial sulphonium precursors. The ion bombardment of the sulphonium precursor leads to a PPV containing no trace of sulfur and chlorine in the structure. By contrast to the PPV obtained by pyrolysis of the precursor, the PPV obtained from the treatment of the precursor with H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ or with H/sub 2/SO/sub 4//SO/sub 3/ contains no chlorine residue but much more sulfur residue. The nature of bonding between oxygen, chlorine, sulfur and the carbon atom will be discussed and the defect structures are proposed.
