Abstract
Let A be a positive definite, self-adjoint operator with the domain D (A ) in a Hilbert space H and let B be A α (0⩽α⩽1). It is shown that if B satisfies certain conditions, then a differentiable semigroup is generated. Other results give the semigroup property for D.L. Russell´s structural damping model
