Abstract :
Simulation of avionic fiber-optic systems requires numerically efficient and accurate models for all optical components, including amplifiers. We describe a compact transient model for Er-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) and Er-doped waveguide amplifiers (EDWAs) that accounts for amplified spontaneous emission (ASE), background loss, homogeneous upconversion, and thermal effects. Comparisons between the model and more comprehensive approaches demonstrate good agreement over a wide range of typical operating conditions.
