Abstract
This article describes the development of one expert system to determinate possible causes of surfaces defects related to friction on steel process and to establish ways of action to correct the disturbance. The outputs of the system were validated by comparison between historical records and expert opinion for same facts. The soundness of the results allows its application for decision making by advising when one deviation is detected, producing sound and timely diagnostics which report economical benefits for the whole business becoming independent the diagnostic from the expert presence.
