Abstract :
In the work presented here we demonstrate the use of linear and nonlinear compression techniques to extend the range of applications of such a source in order to make it suitable for use as a source for optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) up to 1 TBit/s and also as a low repetition rate master source for optical demultiplexing and processing. In conclusion we have demonstrated a number of different techniques, both linear and nonlinear, for the compression of pulses generated by an electroabsorption (EA) modulator. Using linear phase modulation and dispersive chirp compensation we have shown a compression factor of 1.7, while nonlinear techniques have been shown to be capable of compression factors of up to 28
