Abstract
The advent of solitons as fundamental components of communication systems raises interesting questions about the appropriate methods of encoding and decoding information into the solitons. This in turn requires a general theory of the soliton channel which is capable of interpreting a wide range of modulation formats in a relatively simple mathematical framework. This paper is concerned with an approach to this question
