Abstract :
We have demonstrated soliton data transmission at 10 Gbit/s over 842.5 km of standard fibre using dispersion compensation in each amplifier span. The soliton nature of the line alleviates some of the requirement for accurate dispersion compensation provided the dispersion is kept anomalous. By means of replacing electronic repeaters with EDFAs, the use of dispersion compensation and solitons, it should be possible to relatively easily increase the data rate of the existing standard fibre base
