Abstract :
The authors describe the evolution of a switched reluctance (SR) drive family for industrial applications from formulation of the specification to prototype test results. The specification is based on the use of standard induction motor frames and the requirement for constant maximum torque to base speed of 1.5 times the nominal induction motor rating. The totality of the design optimization is emphasized. This leads to high efficiencies, excellent low-speed thermal performance, and continuous ratings above the nominal rating. Test results are presented which show the steady-state and dynamic performances of prototype drives.<>
