Abstract
The UK is well positioned to benefit greatly from rapidly expanding industry and in the long term, the inward investment by major multinational semiconductor Companies is likely to bring about a general increase in the numbers of people developing the skills and knowledge that are appropriate to the industry. However, we must bear in mind that such skills are needed here and now and that work must continue to raise the awareness of the specific requirements of the semiconductor industry. Already, a number of initiatives are in place to develop industry specific courses from National Certificate level through to Post Graduate level. Although much of the work has been developed regionally, the National Microelectronics Institute is playing an important role in consolidating such activities. There is also a great deal of work going on to raise the overall awareness of the industry and to encourage young people to study the technical, scientific and mathematical based subjects
