Abstract :
A simple method of controlling the speed and torque of a brushless DC motor is described. Results obtained on a 2 kVA salient pole synchronous machine used as a brushless DC drive are presented. The control scheme is also applicable to a permanent magnet synchronous machine. Since the machine performance is identical to that of a DC machine, the synchronous motor controlled in the manner discussed can be called a commutatorless DC machine. This control can be applied to salient or nonsalient pole synchronous machines, and to a permanent magnet synchronous machine.<>
