Abstract :
The evolution from a 1D array to a dual mode microwave instrument for the analysis and thermal ablation treatment of organic tissue is presented. The initial prototypes were bulky and could only detect the dielectric properties of organic tissue. Extensive work was done to reduce the size of the devices to include them in a minimal invasive tool and create a second operation mode were the tissue could also be ablated with the same device by controlling the input power and resonance frequency. The final prototypes are able to create a tailored ablation zone with a very low power of 10W, in comparison to other similar techniques.
