Abstract :
The triangle tooth and the wedge head tooth geometries, which are able to reduce the normal force, are proposed, and the thrust force and the normal force for various tooth geometries are examined. On the basis of analysis and experimental results, the following conclusions are obtained: the normal force of the wedge head tooth is greatly reduced as compared with the rectangular one; the average thrust force of the wedge head is scarcely reduced compared with the rectangular one; as the wedge head tooth has two more design parameters in addition to the tooth-width/tooth-pitch ratio, the thrust force distribution is arbitrarily designed by these parameters; and, with the optimum wedge head tooth, the thrust force distribution becomes sinusoidal in form, which is very useful for microstep drives.<>
