Abstract :
The authors present and discuss experimental results on a voltage source resonant DC link (RDCL) power converter using the first commercially available MOS-controlled thyristor (MCT). The switching characteristics, the losses, the drive circuit requirement, and the possible failures of the MCT were assessed when the converter was driving a 5.0 hp induction motor. The performance of the MCT is compared with previously reported results using other power devices. The MCT did not show any noticeable turn-on or turn-off problems. A short tail was observed during turn-off. The power loss of the MCT is about 2.5% of the input power. The device has experienced failures at voltage and current levels well below its ratings.<>
