Abstract :
Summary form only given. Parametric excitation of upper hybrid/electron Bernstein waves by an HF heater in the high-latitude ionosphere via a thermal oscillating two-stream instability has been investigated. The purely growing decay mode is described by the fluid equations including the thermal effect, while the kinetic equations are employed to analyze the electron Bernstein sidebands. It is found that the instability process can be excited both above (primarily in the long wavelength regime, i.e., /spl lambda/ > 3 m) and below (primarily in the short wavelength regime) the upper hybrid resonance layer.
