This paper explores Network Rail´s strategy to employ intelligent infrastructure to enhance overall business performance and how this will help to deliver the railway of the future. In particular, the paper describes the historical approach to condition monitoring; its modern deployment; a future approach based on a continuous understanding of asset condition; and the use of management information to make tactical and strategic decisions
