Surface handling effects of fabricating thin dielectric film HDPE on TSDC analysis

Abstract :
Press-formed films of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) were fabricated using a hand-made press sheet system. Thermally stimulated discharge current (TSDC) analysis of those films was carried out. In order to determine the relation between the TSDC and film manufacturing processes, parameters such as cooling rate and film surface roughness are investigated. The surface roughness is strongly dependent on forming plate materials which are in contact with the surface of the HDPE film during the press forming process. HDPE films which were in contact with Teflon sheets on both surfaces during the manufacturing process showed a large TSDC heterocurrent peak at 90°C. In the case of a noncovering forming process, the HDPE films did not show any apparent TSDC peaks. Post-plasma surface processing of the HDPE films using low-pressure glow discharge was found to be very effective in connection with the TSDC of the films
