Abstract :
The possible use of an ionic pump in order to increase the air flux in a convector heater is examined. The functioning of such an electroaerodynamic heater is modeled and experimentally investigated. The distribution of space charge injected by a set of point electrodes and the influence of the temperature of the heating resistor on back emission and breakdown voltage are studied. The injected space charge is shown to lie in regions which do not overlap and between which the air is charge free. It is shown that an ionic pump can be used to impose an air flow in a convector heater provided the working conditions are such that there is no counter-injection from the heating resistor. A prototype of a 2 kW convector of small size was built and tested. It gave satisfactory results as concerns the mean air temperature at the exit, the absence of red-hot heating of the resistor, and ozone production
