Abstract
This work presents an investigation on the parameters of microstrip patch antennas with metamaterial inspired substrates and superstrates. The metamaterial inspired behavior is obtained using split-ring resonators printed on dielectric substrates and complementary split-ring resonators perforated in thin metallic surfaces (such as ground planes). The effect of these metamaterial structures on the antenna parameters such as: resonant frequency, return loss, and bandwidth are investigated. Simulation is performed using Ansoft HFSS software. FR4 Prototypes are built and measured to validate this study. Good agreement between simulation and measurement results is observed.
