Abstract :
Summary form only given. The optical second-harmonic polarization of a magnetic medium is generally described by a third-rank polar tensor for the crystallographic contribution and a fourth-rank polar tensor for the magnetization-induced part of the incoming light field and the magnetization of the medium. In centrosymmetric materials, both tensors are only nonzero at surfaces and interfaces, where the inversion symmetry is broken.
